Spooky, suspenseful, and special: A great first offering from Jessica Hawke
By William D Proctor
This is the first book in a series about Bridget Young, an otherwise normal high school student who developed the ability to communicate with ghosts after nearly dying in the car accident that killed her older sister. But lest you get the wrong impression, this story has very little in common with "The Sixth Sense" beyond "I see dead people." (And yes, that line is actually quoted in the book.) Bridget plans to perform a ritual on her birthday in couple of weeks that will end her connection with the dead, and that would return her life to normal except for two problems: 1) she will no longer be able to talk with her sister's ghost, and 2) she meets a new ghost, clearly the victim of a horrible murder, whose killer is still on the loose. Suddenly the upcoming test on "Hamlet" doesn't seem so important.

Jessica Hawke does an excellent job setting up the various characters, and while many of them fit typical (real and imagined) high school tropes (the out-there girl with ever-changing hair colors, the prom-queen in waiting, the stern-but-wise and witty teacher/mentor) they don't come across as stale or clichéd. The story is told with Bridget's first-person narrative, and this allows the exposition to be revealed throughout the book as she introduces us to other students, her family, and her "gang" of past-life helpers like her posthumous police contact and Kale, her ever-cryptic "Guardian." But while the story is clearly aimed at a Young Adult audience, the plotting and character development make for great reading even if you don't fit the demographic. (Like me!)

The key thing for a book like this is whether or not the story is compelling and suspenseful, and on both counts it is a great success. By the halfway point it's hard to put down, and at no point does the narrative feel rushed or stretched for too long--the timing of the narrative keeps things moving along at a fast pace but with out any deus ex machina cheating to get out of possible jams. There are a couple of unresolved elements by the end, but I'm sure those will be dealt with in future volumes.

As with a lot of stories in the horror genre, there is some foul language and some disturbing descriptions of violence, especially involving teenage characters, but that is partly what makes this type of horror story work: the ghosts aren't as scary as a live non-supernatural serial killer. While spirits of the dead are an important element in the setting, the characters of the book are dealing with grief, the struggle for independence between teenagers and their parents, and the dangers of human predators who have lost their sense of humanity. Those are the critical ideas that drive the story forward and make for a rewarding reading experience.

If you are not a regular reader of urban fantasy literature, I think you will still enjoy this book because of the quality of the writing, and if you are, this book/series is a welcome addition to the genre. I eagerly await reading "Phantom Traces," the second book in the series. Jessica Hawke has produced a real winner here, and I give it a very high recommendation!
