Domestic violence is a pervasive problem in our society that has only recently come to be acknowledged in public discussion. Though many see it as a social and political problem grounded in unequal gender roles, this level of analysis fails to explain adequately why many battered women return to their abusers despite intense suffering and the certainty of more physical violence.

The Illusion of Love challenges the prevailing model, which views the victim of abuse as a normal woman who is unable to escape from her batterer due to the effects of terror and psychological collapse. Instead, David Celani offers a new answer―that women who are battered have a fundamental attraction to partners who are abusive.

Based on his years of clinical experience treating battered women, Celani applies object relations theory and case examples from his own practice to show that many women―and indeed some men―are unconsciously drawn to abusive partners because of personality disorders caused by childhood abuse and neglect. He argues that any effective treatment for battered women must help unravel futile and self-defeating patterns, such as ones that spring from fears of abandonment and fascination with men who produce exaggerated promises of love followed by extreme rejecting behaviors.

The Illusion of Love examines the personalities of abusers as well, many of whom suffer from narcissism, a disorder that is also often associated with childhood abuse and neglect. Narcissistic men lash out violently in an attempt to control their own fears or abandonment and to compensate for unsatisfied emotional needs.

Celani concludes that domestic violence is often the tragic result of a union between individuals with complementary personality disorders. His findings fly in the face of the politically correct refusal to examine the behavior of the victim of abuse, a strategy that has led to a severe misunderstanding of the dynamics of the battering scenario. The Illusion of Love calls for primary prevention of neglectful parenting to stem the tide of abuse in the future, offering tangible hope for the treatment of victims of abuse as they attempt to extricate themselves from unhealthy, damaging relationships.

an insightful view of destructive relationships

The author provides a foundational understanding of the psychodynamics and cyclic nature of abusive relationships. Celani explains how adult relations are unconscious repetitions of early childhood 'object relations'. He also compares his theories to those of other researchers and addresses practical methods for helping the victims. He is apparently passionate about the subject, making the book lively and approachable for lay persons as well as for psychotherapists.

Why do Women Stay?

If you have been abused or you work with people who are being abused (that accounts for 85% of the US) read this book. It's not obvious, even to victims, why they can't just walk away. Since typically the abuser is male and victim is a female I was impressed that this compassionate book on the subject was written by a male. A classic in the subject of abuse.

The Two Seconds

Fear Is the Key is MacLean's sixth novel, but quite possibly his funniest. The moment after reading the first sentence, I was already laughing out loud. The hero, John Montague Talbot, would become reminiscent of MacLean's 1966 British spy, Philip Calvert, in When Eight Bells Toll. Both characters, not at all similar in terms of career path or "secret" history, are oozing with that dry humor which, in the case of Fear Is the Key, makes up most of Talbot's thoughts. One of the funnier moments occurs when Talbot is held at gunpoint. Talbot then compares the enemy's tone of voice to that of a character requesting muffins during afternoon tea.

The intensely written prologue is the kind that sucker-punches the reader with the last page. The reader will immediately want to know what the heck happened, how it happened, why it happened, and how it is affiliated with Talbot. It will all be explained, as most good books do well, at the end. But to get to the end is a hazardous journey, rife with those ubiquitous, dangerous, gun-wielding adversaries that always harass MacLean's victimized heroes.

The first chapter is expositional in nature, but is important to the conclusion of the book. Talbot entertains himself (and the reader) with his witty thoughts during the interrogation. After this, the book becomes pure action, with car chases, lies, gunplay, a beautiful woman, twists, and at times laugh-out-loud discourse between Talbot and supporting actors.

I found the book to be well written and one of MacLean's better novels. The rewarding moment, however, comes at the end, when MacLean's writing suddenly becomes terrifying, all too real, and tragically oppressive. I was so frightened by what would happen, I became sick with fear. I have read and enjoyed many of MacLean's later novels, but I have been moved only by a few: The Secret Ways, and now Fear Is the Key. Believe it or not, our adventure spy thriller author becomes a poet at the end. Bravo, Mr. MacLean.

I read the 1961 Fawcett Gold Medal paperback. My dictionary dash consisted of bathyscaphe (155), a deep-sea submersible vehicle.

This is one of the best books that I have ever read

In my opinion "Fear is the Key" Is probably one of the on the top five of Alistair MacLean's novels. This novel is very difficult to predict which makes all the better, because in most books the outcome is obvious. The protagonist will overcome all obstacles and achieve his goal and live happily ever after. In this book the outcome is not so easily predicted. It's a great book...

"Fear is the Key" immediately grabs the reader's attention with an odd prologue in which a marine salvage operator listens by radio to the death of his family in an airplane flying over the Caribbean. The scene then shifts to a courtroom in Florida, where a criminal facing sentencing picks up the narration. The man in the courtroom manages to escape and take a hostage, and away the reader goes on a twisting tale involving a rich Florida family, the mafia, and mysterious doings aboard an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Almost no one and nothing is quite as it seems. How author Alistair Maclean resolves this complicated plot is revealed in a superbly crafted and suspenseful finale, packing a significant emotional punch.

Maclean's propensity for dry, understated, and ironic dialogue, both internal and external, is put to good use in this overlooked novel, providing some humorous relief for a storyline that fairly crackles with suspense.

This book is highly recommended to fans of Alistair Maclean, and to the general reader looking for an entertaining and suspenseful story.

Derek Gillman is Executive Director and President of the Barnes Foundation. A former President of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Deputy Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, and Keeper of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts at the University of East Anglia, he is a member of the Association of Art Museum Directors and is currently President of the International Cultural Property Society.

About the Author
Rachel started weaving as a hobby to help jump-start her creativity. Amazing source for beginner and advanced weavers alike!

I love this book!! I learned to weave from Rachel's tutorials on A Beautiful Mess and have completely fallen in love with it, there is a large variety of tutorials and fun patterns in this book that have definitely kept me interested and busy. There's a lot of great information for beginners but there is also a lot of new tips, patterns, stitches, etc. that will keep intermediate/advanced weavers interested and inspired. Rachel also advances past wall hangings and has some patterns for functional pieces as well (a rug, clutch, table runner...) that are so so beautiful and have inspired me to take weaving even further than just small wall hangings, as well as tons of sources for yarn and materials. This book is so worth it and I really can't think of anything bad to say!

Love this book! As a beginner weaver I have learned so much that I was not able to find online or in other books. Even for an experienced weaver this is a great book with unique designs and beautiful photography. I have already complete one project and can't wait to make more!

Seriously Amazing Book for Wall Weavings!

Yayyyy finally a book written with the beginner in mind. I absolutely love this book cover to cover. The pictures are great, the instructions clear, the large variety of techniques are explained well; it is perfect. I should have purchased this book first, but unfortunately I waited for the release of another weaving book that just fell way short of what I thought it was going to be. This is the type of book I wanted. I love that the author lists her suppliers of tools and yarns and even how to construct your own loom rather than running out to buy one. Basically you can get started immediately after getting this book with very few supplies needed. Awesome job Rachel! You deserve all the positive reviews for this book. It was well thought out and very well written. Amazing! Even intermediate weavers would love this book! 11 wall weavings in total for you to draw inspiration from! Cannot wait to get started!

About the Author
Bei Dao, born in Beijing in 1949, has traveled and lectured around the world. He has received numerous international awards for his poetry, and is an honorary member of The American Academy of Arts and Letters. Bei Dao, now a U.S. citizen, is currently Professor of Humanities in the Center for East Asian Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Eliot Weinberger is an essayist and translator, the editor of The New Directions Anthology of Classical Chinese Poetry, and the series editor of Calligrams: Writings from and on China (New York Review Books and Chinese University of Hong Kong Press). He lives in New York City.

short, neat but intense

Bei Dao is one of the most influential living Chinese poets studied by readers from the West. In this edition of The Rose of Time, New Directions Press has kindly provided both the original and translated version of some of the significant works of the poet. Knowing both languages, I have to say the translators have basically done the job to keep the spirit. Yet readers may find the poems quite hard to follow and understand, though they are syntactically neat and clear. The problem of delivery lies in the leap of images present in the original Chinese version. Bei Dao, if I have to categorize, likes to play with images and most of the time his choices seem rather random and surrealistic (and surprisingly, the randomness contributes to the poetics of the works too). I am not sure about the reasons behind this stylistic matter and there is no point to argue so or in a review. But I very much believe that Bei Dao is using images to help him deliver his viewpoints on political or social incidents that he is not allowed to express directly. One of my favorites in this collection is:

Untitled (p.153)

looking back a few times in the poem
night birds singing together
you set smoke drifting free
toward a place where song vanishes

walking into tomorrow beneath an umbrella
you, a wanderer
set out from your own end
what can replace joy

the century's foxes
leap from abyss to abyss
you see how that glorious bridge
disappears at the sky's edge

morning touches
the secret thought of a walnut
above the passion of water
it's the loneliness of cloud walking

Gorgeous writing

Bei Dao has always been my favorite Chinese poet. Since I picked up "The August Sleepwalker" in a bargain bin years ago, I knew I'd happened upon a collection reminiscent of Leopardi, other times Char, and always with the freedom of a Benjamin Peret.

"The Rose of Time" is a gift for anyone who appreciates his steely resolve to refuse censorship, fostered undoubtedly in his native country. The pop magic and sophisticated lyricism form a seamless tunic of sorts:

"Maggots attack the kernel
the kernel comes from dull valleys
from among dull crowds
the government finds its spokesman
cars and mice
have similar expressions

On the road in the sky
the armed forester examines
the sun which rumbles past
over the asphalt lake
he hears the sound of disaster
the untrammeled sound of a great conflagration"

"The Morning's Story"

Recommended for anyone who even just likes poetry.

A great work!

This is probably one of the best books I've ever read. A bit tedious to read, but exceptionally practical and useful today. It is really a course of study with actual prescribed exercises. I completely agree with the previous review and am glad to see this great work available to the public again. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in mental development.

About the Author
Daniel Capocci is Senior Investment Manager at Architas Multi-Manager, a member of the Global AXA Group and has been analysing the hedge fund industry for 15 years firstly as an academic and secondly as a hedge fund investor. On the academic side, Daniel has published research in globally-recognized professional and academic journals, including the Journal of Empirical Finance, the European Journal of Finance and the International Journal of Financial Economics and he has presented at numerous academic and professional conferences. On the investment side, he has spent the bulk of his career analysing individual hedge funds and managing hedge fund portfolios, first investing in offshore funds and more recently focussing his research on alternative UCITS. Daniel published his first book on the topic 'Introduction to Hedge Funds' in 2004 and has contributed to nine other books related to the subject over the years. He holds a PhD from HEC Management School of the University of Liège in Belgium, which focused on the 'Analysis of Hedge Fund Strategies'. He is Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) holder since 2006 and CAIA Chapter Executive. Daniel is Research Associate with the HEC School of Management at the University of Liège in Belgium and with the EDHEC Risk and Asset Management Centre.

Another pager-turner from Anne Perry!

This is the second in the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. I started reading it as soon as I had finished The Cater Street Hangman (the first)! Inspector Pitt is now married to his Charlotte and they make a delightful couple. Although pregnant with their first child, Charlotte does some detecting of her own in this case, helped by her well-to-do sister, Emily. The plot is excellent and the characters are very well-drawn. The strict rules regarding class which most of the Victorian upper-class people in this book feel compelled to follow appear somewhat laughable to us in this more enlightened age but are very destructive for all that! I could not put this book down until I knew whodunnit and I was quite a way through it before I guessed the culprit! A wonderful read!

Enjoy the mystery!

This is the second book in Anne Perry's mystery series involving Charlotte and Inspector Pitt. But note, reading the first in the series, "The Cater Street Hangman" is not a requirement to understanding and enjoying "Callandar Square." Perry seems to have foreseen this issue and wrote the books in this series without any prerequisites. (Obviously, if one can read the books in order, than that's terrific too!) The story, as do most of Perry's works, is set in Victorian England. Perry is so natural in description of places, people and customs of this era, one wonders if she doesn't own a time-machine. In the mystery, two bodies of babies are found buried in the well-to-do, respectable neighborhood of Callandar Square. Rumors abound on who they were and who was the mother. Naturally, the well-born classes dismiss it as the desperate act of a chambermaid or some other lowly working-class girl. But when Inspector Thomas Pitt puts his sleuthing wits to the matter that assumption doesn't seem so easy. The Inspector has recently married Charlotte, who is from an established family. Those in their society may have seen the marriage as unprofitable for her, but Charlotte married for love. Charlotte is a delight with her brains and attitudes, and is ever so likable. She is a woman ahead of her times. Charlotte, through some scheming with her high-society sister, takes up a clerical position in one of the aristocratic homes in Callandar Square as an attempt to uncover any secrets about the discovered bodies. An array of concealments and hush-hush information unfolds as Pitt, Charlotte, and Charlotte's sister begin to delve into the lives of the residents of Callandar Square. There are surprises and heartbreaks as the killer is finally cornered. Perry's skill of dialogue is excellent as the reader learns intimately the attitudes of the various characters. The ending seems a little quick in the realization of the killer, but Perry makes up for it with a touching reflection that Pitt ponders in the final pages. Other readers of this series have suggested they wish there was more dialogue and action between Pitt and Charlotte together. Perhaps feeling a little spoiled from "Cater Street." But I see this as a compliment to Perry, not a fault. The characters so well drawn and their charms when together in a chapter, so relishing, that it will always leave one wanting more. Yet, there are only so many opportunities for a dual appearance in this particular plot. If Perry wrote anymore, it may have seemed forced. But fear not, there are plenty of Charlotte and Pitt books to get happily lost in. And "Callandar Square" was one of them for me.

Appearances Matter in This Victorian Novel of Hidden Sexual Sins

Those who like to pillory the Victorians do so for their application of a double standard, licentiousness in private while appearing spotlessly upright in public. Callander Square is a powerful commentary on that double standard, as the story strips away the cloaks of respectability among neighbors in an upper class neighborhood.

Upper class lives were then seldom examined . . . except by ladies who were gossiping. When two dead babies are found by accident buried in Callander Square, it becomes Inspector Thomas Pitts' duty to examine all of those lives . . . looking for who the mother was. Pitts' theory is that if you can find the mother, you can find the murderer . . . or the circumstances of death if it wasn't murder.

The wealthy men and women in the square do their best to fend off Pitt by focusing him on their servants. Unsuspected by them, Pitts' wife, Charlotte, decides that she wants to find the mother too . . . but to succor rather than to accuse her. Charlotte and her sister Emily play an undercover role in which Emily is the Upstairs mole and Charlotte is the Downstairs mole. Soon, the skeletons are rattling in all the relevant closets. And crimes multiply!

This mystery presents an interesting problem. How do you investigate when all the "good" people either won't talk to you . . . or lie when they do? These people are so delicate that they won't even come out and discuss their concerns. One has to hint around . . . and hope that the message is received and understood. So there's a dance of manners involved here inside of a mystery which is inside of a dysfunctional society. For those who like novels of manners, there is much to enjoy here in addition to the mystery.

I give Ms. Perry great credit for hiding the villains until late in the book. You will know in the last 80 pages or so who did what, but it's a totally incomprehensible mystery before then. If she had shortened up the end a bit, I would have graded the book higher. But the climax is more like a tea party that's gone on too long than a climax until the last few pages.

The writing is superb. A large number of characters are fully developed, and the development is used well to advance the plot.
