Pretty good read on digital strategy and thoughts around driving business change for the new economy. I think one of the hardest challenges right now is being that change agent to move culture and business in a direction that many of the older, less agile employees are comfortable in dealing with. This books gives some good pointers in and talking points in addressing these points.

Starred Review. According to the ballad that made him famous, John Henry did battle with a steam-powered drill, beat the machine and died. Folklorists have long thought John Henry to be mythical, but while researching railroad work songs, historian Nelson, of the College of William and Mary, discovered that Henry was a real person—a short black 19-year-old from New Jersey who was convicted of theft in a Virginia court in 1866. Under discriminatory Black Codes, Henry was sentenced to 10 years in the Virginia Penitentiary and put to work building the C&O Railroad. There, at the Lewis Tunnel, Henry and other prisoners worked alongside steam-powered drills, and at least 300 of them died. This slender book is many-layered. It's Nelson's story of piecing together the biography of the real John Henry, and rarely is the tale of hours logged in archives so interesting. It's the story of fatal racism in the postbellum South. This book really touched my soul !

Although I am a Civil War aficionado, I had rarely read about what happened directly after the war. However, this book has changed my reading habits!!

From the time I was a child, I had a special affection for the John Henry songs and "legends". Well, I had no idea he was REAL-- flesh and blood! This book not only brought him alive for me, but the research and presentation was EXQUISITE. Dr Nelson -- in my eyes you have done a tremendous job of bringing alive not only John Henry, but the terrible wrongs done to thousands of African-American freedmen (and women) in Richmond, by the corrupt "Freedman's Bureau".

By reading this book, in my mind's eye AND ear, I could see the men and women who toiled in the often brutal conditions, to dig tunnels and build track. I could almost hear the weird and wonderful chants that helped lay the track and ease the brutal conditions and physical pain that these people, mostly (wrongfully convicted in many cases) convicts endured, usually until they dropped dead from the years of toil and/or silicosis.

Could that photograph of a John Henry (page 46) in Bealton VA (not that far from Richmond) really be him? Truth is stranger than fiction - perhaps we ARE looking into his smiling face. And one question I have-- how does the Smithsonian REALLY know which bones are his? (maybe I missed something)

The author's narrative, interspersed with highly pertinent photographs AND song verse kept me riveted to this very complex and highly interesting book. Although to some readers the book may seem to start out slow -- it's like a steam train -- it eventually picks up speed and keeps one fascinated.

The book's narrative gives great detail to that era in Richmond that John Henry lived, as well as the "white house" by the tracks (Federal Penitentiary where so many of these Freedmen and women were wrongfully incarcerated) and as it winds past John Henry the individual, it reveals the highly pertinent correlation with those railroad songs handed down by word-of-mouth and then collected and sung by the like of people such as Carl Sandburg, folk singer as well as poet, Pete Seeger, Burl Ives.

The book then shows how the John Henry story and ballads found their way into art, and life as well - expressed in the artwork and subject matter in Marvel Comix; expressed in the song and art of striking workers, the WPA, Karl Marx, the Communists and Socialists in America in the 1930's, the "radical and liberals of the 1940's", the Black Worker Protest Songs -- and more.

Of great interest also was the way the South incorporated (and the way it did NOT incorporate) black history regarding John Henry and other related Afro-American folk heroes and song into its school textbooks and library books back in the 40's and 50's.

I borrowed this book from the library -- but I was so impressed with it that I bought one for myself. I want to do my own research (in fact I'm playing some CD samples from Amazon right now, having to do with John Henry and word of mouth folk songs) on these ballads, and those who sang them as well as those who still sing them today.

I cannot find any fault with this book. The fact that I am now hooked on the John Henry ballad and all the history (past AND present) that goes with it is proof enough of this book's influence.

Does Dr. Nelson have a web site that relates to this book? I guess that's one more bit of research that I will undertake!! (I hope he does!)

PS - the "Gandy Dancer's Gal" on page 131 is a tremendous summation on canvas, of the strength and hardships, as well as the joys that were part of these track workers' lives.

And on my occasional travels on AMTRAK's Capitol Limited, when the train slowly winds thru some of those hand-hewn tunnels and past rough old forest growth, I look for the marks of 19th century tools on the rocks, and think back on those days of almost 150 years ago, when these men (and some women) worked side by side, sweating, hurting, working to their deaths, laboring for the railroad.

Wish I had read this before my first college history course

This book offers a great introduction into what and how a real historian does history. Who would guess that an old dump can be more informative than a documentary movie? The 'truth' about the real John Henry is only a hook for demonstrating the confusion, guess work, and desire to tell an acceptable story that is history. This very readable little book could go along way to breaking the belief of many that all you need to understand history is a good textbook.

fascinating read!

As someone interested in history, the South, civil rights, and folk songs, I loved this book. The author starts by tracking down evidence to propose a candidate for the original John Henry who inspired the song. The author then fills in the details of what John Henry's life after arrest was probably like based on court, prison, and railroad records. Certainly, this part is speculative, as some reviewers have complained, but there is no reason a priori to expect that John Henry's experiences were significantly different from the norm. Besides, the discussion of the horrifying conditions the railroad builders and workers endured is eye-opening. Much of the latter portion of the book discusses how the song spread and the meaning it had at different times and to different groups. The author obviously did extensive research and creates a fascinating portrait of how a song mutates to suit current times.

A Wonderful Introduction to the Macro Economy

This book not only covers lucidly the major categories of macroeconomic theory, but also explains in considerable detail what every student of economics should know about national income account, exchange rates, inflation, and the like.

What is missing from the book should be carefully noted. There is no discussion of dynamics in any form, except for elementary and outdated notions of the Keynesian multiplier, and the like. This is good, because standard macroeconomic theory pretends to do market dynamics but it is in fact all smoke and mirrors. There is no serious, acceptable model of market dynamics, no matter what the so-called experts tell you (if the claim there is, they are liars or self-deluded fools).

Also missing are perspectives on economic regulation. There is no discussion of state failures vs. market failures, the role of automatic stabilizers vs. discretionary fiscal and monetary policy, and no discussion of the sociopolitical forces that led to the replacement of classical macro by Keynesian, and Keynesian by New Classical.

What is missing from this book is controversial, but a discussion of the various sides of the issues would be useful to the reader, who must search elsewhere for such material.

A Very Basic Intro - But a Good One

Professor Moss' Concise Guide to Macroeconomics is titled aptly. It is very concise; fluidly written and easily read in a couple of sittings. It is also very fundamental. The author focuses in one the three core pillars of macro-economics, output, money and expectations, and takes the reader through them in a tried and trued presentation format: tell the reader what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you just told them.

As such the first part has a chapter dedicated to introducing each of these three core concepts. The second part has a chapter for each of these three concepts again, but with slightly more sophistication afforded from the reader now having seen all three concepts in isolation, and the conclusion quickly ties everything together holistically. I found this format very effective for the content it was meant to convey.

To be clear though concise is the key word to describe this book. It covers first things first and only first things. As such many concepts, such as foreign reserves, aren't even mentioned. This book is very much a starting point, and it is written for the lay reader with only a simple or passing knowledge of economics concepts in general. It certainly won't make you a genius who can understand the world. It could likely help students understand concepts qualitatively but has no real math or graphical analysis and probably wouldn't help students with their homework or tests.

Despite its brevity and the fact it skips some topics many would like to see in a macroeconomics book I feel five stars is richly deserved on account of an admirable and rare honesty on behalf of the author. Although a Harvard Business School professor (and thus, if reputation is to be believed, about as educated as one can come) Mr. Moss is extremely clear that macroeconomics is not a precise science, most macroeconomic theories do not slide seamlessly into successful practice in real life, the reasons behind macroeconomic situations (i.e. currency collapses, recessions, sharp inflation, etc.) can be ambiguous and arguable, and macroeconomic monetary and fiscal policies (such as interest rate cuts or deficit spending) can have contradictory and unpredictable impacts in the real world. His explanation of macroeconomics can show how we can ask smarter questions to increase our chances of being successful when it comes to private enterprise and government venture, but also shows why there is such disagreement and room for argument on both sides of any macroeconomic issue.

A great starting place and, rare for an academic book, armed with a highly appropriate warning on the limits of a imprecisely understood albeit very important topic.

A great book that covers the basics

I have a degree on economics, but my university pretty much skipped the whole macroeconomics subject so I needed something to fill the gap: this book did it perfectly. It shaves off all the boring academic stuff and goes straight to the point of how macro works, without making it too complicated. You probably need at least a bit of confidence with economics and numbers, but there are plenty of examples that will make it easy for you.

This is not a university manual and it doesn't go too far with the details and maths, but there is no better introduction to macro.

The workbook and book together are the best therapy books I have ever used - 10 stars!

This book is a great help in therapy. I have personally gone through the book twice, and gotten a great deal out of it both times. The workbook really allows you to take what you learn in the book and apply it to your own life. It is hard. The process of becoming aware of what is and isn't abuse is hard enough (and this has nothing to do with "recovering" memories, it simply has to do with finding out what you thought was normal is horrifyingly not). Processing the memories is what, over time, helps you stop living in them all the time. But then, you have to face the Biblical truth of sin being passed down the generations. It's not enough to break the pattern. You also have to recognize how you lashed out and hurt people while you were trying to protect yourself. You have to stop doing that and learn how to have healthy responses. The first time I went through the book, I fought against the idea that I, the victim, also victimized other people along the way. The second time through, I accepted that my abusers had shaped my behavior, and that I had to choose how I wanted to treat people, and not let my abusers control my current relationships. That changed my life.

A Tender Devotional Alternative to Working Through Sexual Abuse

As I've mentioned in my previous reviews on self-help books for abuse survivors, I don't go for the current so-called Christian clap-trap ideas of healing and forgiving. Many push the idea that you should "forgive and forget," bury the memories, and be nice to your abuser by never mentioning the past, to "get along" at all costs. Some also argue that we should just hand it all over to Jesus and everything will be fine.

Dan Allender boldly attacks and rejects these notions in his book The Wounded Heart. Allender is a Christian counselor who has worked extensively with victims of sexual abuse throughout his career, and Colorado Christian University I believe still maintains a sexual abuse ministry he helped establish. The book itself is written mostly for women, though I believe men can also benefit from it.

My interest in this book was piqued by a friend who herself had used the book to tackle her own past issues. Something about the hopeful tone I picked up in her voice told me this book offered something different and worth looking into.

The Wounded Heart took me several months to finish, but not because it is poorly written or boring. Rather it is because Allender's words, what he has to offer, is so intense that I had to take breaks and let the weight of what I just read absorb before I could move forward with taking another bite. This book is definitely not for those in search of a quick read or wanting pat answers.

The first thing Allender does, and nicely done I might add, is stake through the heart all the notions that we have to play nicey-nice for everyone else's comfort and look like a good Christian while facing down our pasts. If anything, he states that this is probably the most damaging thing to push on an abuse survivor, because you can't bury what's alive and expect it not to scream. The cost of "getting along" with someone who has committed one of the greater evils in life against you for the sake of pleasing everyone else is ultimately that of revictimization, greater pain, and a deadening of the soul.

In reality this is not a true calling of Christ. Instead it's a way of other Christians to not have to face the discomfort they feel in response to the painful reality that something as horrendous as sexual abuse exists. They don't want to risk losing that warm fuzzy feeling some contemporary Christian experts and authors have rightly come to term "cheap grace." It is artificial in nature and stifles long-term growth.

From here, Allender explores how victims are often set up for abuse, most commonly from a vicious cycle created from an unloved, unhappy child receiving attention from a perpetrator zeroing in on a kill. The child, in turn, will do anything for continued attention... setting them up for unwilling compliance to the unspeakable.

Sometimes this is reinforced by other family members who cannot or will not understand why their child will suddenly turn cold towards Uncle Fred and chastize her for not minding her manners. It perpetuates an incredibly ugly cycle.

Allender then analyzes the effects sexual abuse has on the victim in later life. He outlines three specific personalities that can emerge. I recognized myself in all three as I looked back on my life. I could see where I was a Good Girl to please everyone and get along so people would like me, the Tough Girl because of that part of me that'd had enough of being a doormat and hyper-reacted, and the Party Girl during the times I wanted attention but didn't want anyone too close to me, which sadly was often.

The Wounded Heart then sets before the reader a challenge: We must die to the self that has come out of the past, and find renewed life in God to become what we were meant to be, not what the abuser made one into through his or her sinful acts, and we must act boldly for this change to occur. Allender could not be more tender or compassionate in getting this message across, but he also delivers it with complete and unwavering conviction. What he has to say is undeniable and motivating.

It's also crystal clear that we must do the work. God is there to guide and inspire, but as human beings with free will, the effort and the power to change is ours. Simply lobbing the whole mess into Jesus' lap and expecting Him to fix it all without us pitching in simply will not do... and speaking philosophically here, I do not believe it would be within our natures to feel satisfied or successful even if problems could be solved this way.

The book also covers ways in which a former victim can and should respond to various abusers in their daily life. Allender breaks down that there are different types of abusers, ranging from those annoying snotty little jerks we'll have to deal with every day simply because we live in a fallen world, all the way up to the perpetrator of the abuse and what Allender calls an abuse-surrogate, a significant other who has taken the place of the perpetrator in the victim's life and mind and continues to create an abusive environment. With the last two, there must be change to end the cycle.

With the childhood perpetrator, The Wounded Heart makes it very clear that there is no requirement to forgive or continue a relationship with such a person unless they have met certain conditions that indicate they repent and take responsibility for what they have done. In fact, it is argued, a relationship must not continue and there must not be forgiveness at all until this happens for the sake of the victim's recovery.

This is a Christian principle through and through. Allender cites Luke 17:3 in his emphasis that forgiveness towards the abuser is indeed conditional, something many Christians overlook in what is likely a spirit of misinformation. Yes, we must forgive as God forgives; however, God only forgives when there is repentance and amends are made.

"They know not what they do" cannot be argued here either - an abuser is a predator. They plan, they scheme and they deliberately attack having full knowledge of right and wrong. God has no qualms with calling us to discern what is evil. We must, lest we compromise morals and principles that help us protect the innocent.

The Wounded Heart is a cogent, loving devotional that dedicates itself soulfully to helping the sexual abuse victim discover a relationship with God they likely imagined they could never have. I cannot recommend this book enough for any Christian who is struggling with childhood sexual abuse; I have no reason to believe it can't help non-Christians at some level as well, if for nothing else than for validation and ideas on how to work through the abuse.

A companion workbook is available for use on one's own or in a support group. I do have a copy of this and I will review it once I've worked through its contents.

Best Recovery Manual Around

After many months in recovery for addiction, I finally realized why I hated myself so much--unresolved issues from my childhood sexual abuse (CSA). Our church sponsors a recovery ministry for over 200 people each week. We have about 25 groups covering 18 different topics, but no men's CSA group. I was very apprehensive about co-leading a men's CSA recovery group until I read this book!

Dr. Dan Allender has counseled thousands of victims of sexual abuse, and his wisdom is here. Although written with "she" pronouns, the book applies as much to men as women. Along with the companion textbook, The Wounded Heart deals with guilt, shame, contempt, memory issues, sexual repercussions, and many more topic areas.

His stories will cut you to the core, where you will find yourself facing your own fears and false beliefs.

Where was God when I was being abused? If you don't struggle with that question, then you'll never move forward. Dr. Allender allows you to struggle; he pokes all the sore spots from your past. His no-holds-barred approach is compelling, and you're left with nowhere to hide. You'll either run away from your past or work through it.

I honestly wouldn't have agreed to facilitate a men's sexual abuse recovery group without this resource. If your serious about dealing with your abuse--Buy This Book!

Mapping the Civil War is a cottage industry that began during the war and has prospered ever since. In official reports and popular histories issued after the war, numerous maps gave military movement and battles a geographical clarity and purpose they often lacked for the soldiers fighting. In this useful compendium of maps, largely made up of David Greenspan's pictorial maps originally drawn for Bruce Catton's American Heritage Illustrated History of the Civil War (1960) and various hand-drawn and -printed wartime maps, the importance of maps in military history and in the history of the war becomes evident. The maps cover 15 major battles/campaigns, from Bull Run to Nashville--each introduced by a serviceable description of the engagement and supplemented by illustrations. Still, this book offers little that is new or surprising. Recommended only for those libraries that lack the Catton volume and The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War (1978) or other reliable collections of Civil War maps.

Wonderful book. I purchased this as a replacement for my home library. Great item for any history or geography buff.

Helpful, but a little thin...

A common problem I experience when reading a book about a Civil War campaign is that it invariably lacks detailed maps. Battle Maps of the Civil War makes a great companion volume when confronted with this problem. It covers important battles from both the Eastern and Western theaters, but it is by no means comprehensive. The overview of the East covers from 1st Manassas to the Wilderness and Spotsylvania, while the discussion of the West begins with Shiloh, extending through the Atlanta Campaign to Nashville. Each campaign receives a two page write-up accompnied by period photos and maps, some excellent Don Troiani prints, and a terrific illustration of each battlefield that covers the highlights of the fight. Additionally, it has a short section on Naval strategy, and small bios of the more famous Union and Confederate General Officers. The book is a little thin, with no coverage of 1865, but overall a great reference.

Lifechanging for an 8yr old

I joined the Army and work for the National Park Service because when I was eight my elementary class had a trip to the library every week and the Am. Heritage Civil War was always on the backshelf with a book prop and it was the first thing that I went to every time because of these maps. Not completely accurate and condensed way down but they were and still are truly amazing works of art.
