Good reference for experienced astrodynamicists

This book does what its preface promises. It provides a ready reference for help in solving mission design problems. The book really requires some familiarity with astrodynamics before you open it. A strength is reliance almost entirely on algebraic solutions, rather than proceeding from a vector approach. This has made the examples very useful in the astro course I teach, since most of my students are weak in vectors. The book is useful for practitioners and advanced students.

I can't comment on the software. My copy came with a 3 1/2" floppy. I have not had a computer capable of reading this format for a while.....

Excellent Practitioner's Reference

This is an excellent reference for aerospace engineer's to have on their desk. It summarizes all the necessary equations used in the design of spacecraft missions. It is not a "deep" book in the sense that there are minimal derivations. It is not a "tutorial" book, either, for anyone new to the field. For a tutorial and/or in depth mathematical derivations, look elsewhere (e.g., Battin: Introduction to the Mathematics and Methods of Astrodynamics or Vallado: Fundamentals of Astrodynamics and Applications). However, the author is true to the goal he states in his preface: "I like a book that will fit in your briefcase." Despite being very thin, it has proven very useful for me in my work. I highly recommend it! (The ORBWIN software included with the book is also highly useful.)

This text presents the astrodynamic aspects of a spacecraft mission design. The text is very short (about 140 pages without appendixes) but very dense with a lot of equations and information. Derivations are cut short and you need some basis in orbital mechanics in order to appreciate the book.

This is not a book to learn orbital mechanics per se but how to plan a interplanetary spacecraft mission from launch to arrival.

Dark Tower Comics Back on Track

The Little Sisters run has been a high point in the Dark Tower comics. My enthusiasm for these visual companions to the novels had waned over the last couple of arcs as the series explored Roland's "lost years," the time between the end of his Wizard and Glass flashback and the first Dark Tower book, The Gunslinger. I was initially excited by the prospect of seeing events only partially described in the books, like the Battle of Jericho Hill. The problem has been that, as the comics drift farther away from original King material, writer Robin Furth's voice becomes more prominent than King's. Based on the short story from Everything's Eventual, Little Sisters brings back the charm and familiarity of the first couple Dark Tower arcs.

You'll find some of King's lines from the short story; you'll recognize, and sometimes be floored by, the representations of the Slow Mutants, the little doctors, and the Sisters and their pavilion. This run also presents some of the most shocking gore and violence of the entire series, as the Little Sisters story is one of the purest moments of horror in Dark Tower fiction. Although the series has not yet reached the first Dark Tower novel, Little Sisters brings it to the doorstep. We're now once again firmly entrenched in Stephen King material, and the Battle of Tull from The Gunslinger is up next. Marvel's illustrators have done an overall amazing job adapting the Dark Tower into graphic novel form, and from the looks of the Little Sisters of Eluria, they will not disappoint as they wade back into well-known, well-loved King territory.

Creepy

This graphic novel is probably the best adaptation of Stephen King's Roland story, and is definitely the most creepy and horrific. It follows king's short story very well, and the artistry is excellent! There's a lot of violence and gore, and the drawings live up to the horror of the original story. I have gotten a lot of enjoyment out of this entire series, but this one tops all of the others. Hopefully, the writers and artists can keep up the good work they have been doing, and giving all of the Stephen King fans a visual treat, and a pictorial glance into the Dark Tower story.

I'm a big Stephen King/Dark Tower fan. I've been collecting the Dark Tower Series comics since they launched, they do justice to the novels, quite possibly the best part of these books is the back section with the history of the worlds, they really open your eyes to whats going around. Even if you're a purist of the sort that doesn't want to read comics these are worth picking up just for the back section.

Truly the worst of the series

God-awful book, glad I got it from the library... took about 10 minutes to buzz through, 70% of the projects have nothing to do with the PC/you could just use your cell-phone (GPS, mapquest, etc)

And the few that have anything to do with "modding" are painting the case and installing standard/prefab parts.

I'm not some computer "whiz" (heh, whiz) either, but save yourself the wasted 10 minutes.

Soon Mein Kampf was even being passed out to newlywed couples as a gift. Ironically, and frighteningly, by the time Hitler came to power on January 30, 1933, what has been considered by many to be the most satanic book ever written was running neck and neck with the Bible at the top of the German bestseller lists. In his excellent introduction to this definitive American translation of Mein Kampf, Konrad Heiden writes: "For years Mein Kampf stood as proof of the blindness and complacency of the world. For in its pages Hitler announced -- long before he came to power -- a program of blood and terror in a self-revelation of such overwhelming frankness that few among its readers had the courage to believe it ... That such a man could go so far toward realizing his ambitions, and -- above all -- could find millions of willing tools and helpers; that is a phenomenon the world will ponder for centuries to come." About the Author
Ralph Manheim (b. New York, 1907) was an American translator of German and French literature. His translating career began with a translation of Mein Kempf in which Manheim set out to reproduce Hitler's idiosyncratic, often grammatically aberrant style. In collaboration with John Willett, Manheim translated the works of Bertolt Brecht. The Pen/Ralph Manheim Medal for translation, inaugurated in his name, is a major lifetime achievement award in the field of translation. He himself won its predecessor, the PEN translation prize, in 1964. Manheim died in Cambridge in 1992. He was 85.

About the Author

Worth the purchase

I highly recommend this book, and I'm a cop. Which basically means I'm not that bright, and even I could comprehend this book.

Asimov is easy to read and understand. He takes complicated issues, and simplifies them. He possess a brilliant mind, and views the world from a different perspective than most other humans. As I read this collection of essays, I found myself time and time again saying, "that's so true, why didn't I think of that". It's an enlightening book, a good read, and it's cheap.

I highly recommend it.

The definitive antidote for pseudoscience

No intelligent person needs to be told (surely?) that Isaac Asimov's name on a book is a guarantee of excellence. And most are aware that Asimov's science essays (62 in this collection) cover the multitude and variety of subjects that Robert Heinlein had in mind when he coined the word "synthesist." So instead of trying to gild fine gold or paint the lily, I will simply reproduce Asimov's words on three of the issues he discusses.
On religious doublethink: "If there is an earthquake and a thousand people die, and one person is uncovered in a ruined house, unhurt, the Moral Majority types cry, 'A miracle!' and fall to their knees in gratitude. And the thousand who died, whose deaths, indeed, were necessary to convert the one surviver into a miracle, what of them?"
On overpopulation: "Motherhood is a privilege that we must literally ration, for children, if produced indiscriminately, will be the death of the human race; and any woman who deliberately has more than two children is committing a crime against humanity."
On skepticism: "I believe evidence. I believe observation, measurement and reasoning, confirmed by independent observers. I'll believe anything, no matter how wild or ridiculous, if there is evidence for it. The wilder and more ridiculous something is, however, the firmer and more solid the evidence will have to be."
Other topics to which Asimov devotes essays include resurrected gods, creationism's demand to be taught in public schools, argument from consensus, scientific illiteracy in politics, sexual equality, pollution, and hyperspace ("There is no evidence for its existence").

Slightly outdated, but insightful thoughts and crisp prose

The late Dr. Asimov's clear wit and wisdom is taken to bear here on fools and the future. He begins by excoriating "Religious Radicals," in harsh liberal prose that seems rather outdated today. (For instance, there is a chapter called "The Reagan Doctrine" that pokes fun at tactics Ronald Reagan used in battling the Soviet empire.) Other chapters are also dated, including several chapters on environmental predictions that are informed by distinctly Malthusian notions of supply shortages. (To wit, "And in the mad scramble for food on your part and on the part of billions of others, the people of eath will further damage the world they live in and will begin to fight each other over scraps.") Still, Asimov writes lucidly on science in a number of historical and opinion pieces, which are carefully reasoned. Five essays at the book's end give perspective to the late thinker's personal life, and a number of inserted memorials (new to this edition) from other prominent scientists and science fiction authors really round out a book that shows Asimov's incomparable breadth of interest. The "Roving Mind" of the title is Asimov's own intellect; any thoughtful reader will find his own mind broadened for having read it.
