The last surviving victim of an experiment that implanted the subjects' heads with electrodes that decipher coded messages is the unnamed narrator of this excellent book by Murakami, one of Japan's best-selling novelists and winner of the prestigious Tanizaki prize. Half the chapters are set in Tokyo, where the narrator negotiates underground worlds populated by INKlings, dodges opponents of both sides of a raging high-tech infowar, and engages in an affair with a beautiful librarian with a gargantuan appetite. In alternating chapters he tries to reunite with his mind and his shadow, from which he has been severed by the grim, dark "replacement" consciousness implanted in him by a dotty neurophysiologist. Both worlds share the unearthly theme of unicorn skulls that moan and glow. Murakami's fast-paced style, full of hip internationalism, slangy allegory, and intrigue, has been adroitly translated. Winner of the Tanizaki Literary prize (the Japanese equivalent of the Pulitzer), by acclaimed young Japanese novelist Murakami: a stunning combination of the contemporary and brash with elegiac allegory, all topped off by a strong measure of cyberpunk. The ``hard-boiled'' hero, 35 and divorced, is a man of possessions--a collection of imported whiskeys; interests--old American movies and cooking; but no emotions. Which, coupled with his brilliant work on computers, makes him the ideal candidate for a mysterious aging scientist holed up under the sewers of Tokyo. Here, protected by a waterfall and by flesh-devouring creatures, the INKlings, from the two competing information organizations that control everything in the country, the scientist has devised a perfect secret code by operating on the brains of selected computer workers. The hero, summoned to the scientist's lair, is presented with a unicorn's skull and told of a project called ``The End of the World.'' Alternating between these encounters with the scientist, the scientist's granddaughter, and bully-boys bent on finding out what he knows, there is the story of the ancient walled town at the end of the world. In this home of one-horned beasts, a young man arrives, is separated from his shadow, and is set to work interpreting the dreams of the skulls in the library. The two worlds increasingly connect and at the end fuse, with the hero, though certifiably dead, for the first time morally and emotionally alive and resistant to the society's pervasive control of the individual. One of the best books I've ever bought on a whim...

I purchased this book on a whim - the descriptions sounded interesting enough to merit a look.
Boy was I stunned by it. One of the best books I've read in a long time and probably one of the best novels I've read that's been written in the last 20 years.
Beautifully written (and translated) it spoke to many different sides of me. The novel brilliantly fuses a number of different cultural genres (science fiction, mystery, film noir, fantasy, magical realism, "cyberpunk") into a mix that, amazingly, works very well. Try to imagine a collaborative effort by Garcia-Marquez, William Gibson, and Walker Percy and you almost might be able to envision what this book feels like to read. Who else but a Japanese author could make such an intriguing pop culture cocktail?
Besides being a genre-bender, the premise of the book and the questions that it raises concerning the relationship between humanity and technology, the soul and the mind, and the individual and society are quite thought provoking.
Did I mention that the book is very funny at times too?
This is unlike any other book you'll ever read. Definitely worth checking out IMHO.

The Interconnectedness of All Things

This is simply the best book I have ever read! I was hooked from the first page and drawn into the world of the narrator as subtly as one is drawn into a dream. The linking of the subconscious and conscious elements of the mind are at work here, and this is what makes this book all at once so wonderful, disturbing and enlightening. It is a psychological masterpiece and lays bare the interconnectedness of all things- the people in our lives, the places, the choices we make, our dreams, desires, longings and regrets and most importantly, the often inexplicable and enigmatic relationship between our subconscious and conscious mind. The masterful way Murakami interweaves the chapters begins with a divergent simplicity and gradually progresses to a complex, synchronistic web/mandala in which all points share a beginning yet have no end.

WHICH WORLD DO I BELONG TO?

Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World follows two distinct and parallel storylines, both with unnamed narrators who might or might not be the same person. In the first storyline, the narrator is a "Calcutec", a computer specialist working for "The System" to protect data against the "Semiotecs", an organization of powerful black market information pirates. Called down into the sewers below Tokyo against regulations and against the law, the main character agrees to "shuffle", or encode the work of a nutty professor who says he has discovered a way to make bones talk! His life might be in danger though because all the major powers want a piece of this new technology. This plotline alternates chapters with a more fantasy type idyll about a town surrounded by an impenetrable and unscalable wall, in which the narrator tries to figure out who he is and how he came there. There are other inhabitants but all their comments are pretty cryptic. But there's some bizarre stuff going on. For example, there are unicorns grazing around the town, you lose your shadow, and the narrator is given the job of "reading dreams" from the skulls of strange beasts! He must set about figuring out how to escape unless he wants to be trapped there forever.

This novel was weird but refreshing. I thought it was pretty clever of Murakami to almost write two books in one, the first being a cyberpunk adventure and the other a strange surreal fantasy. But it worked. Don't worry, these two stories within a novel do have a purpose in being joined together, even though you might not understand all the "physics" talk when explanations are given. You get the gist of it. Harold Bloom once said that what gives a novel its lasting greatness is that it has to be strange. Murakami more than lives up to this thought and makes you feel as if you've entered a new world. That's a good thing. It really gives you a sense of wonder and mental adventure which you don't find too often in literature these days. I look forward to reading his other works.

If you liked this book, I would highly recommend viewing a Japanese anime called Haibane-Renmei which was greatly influenced by the fantasy parts of Hard-Boiled Wonderland.

Surprisingly useful

I bought this book for my capstone senior design project. Contains some surprisingly useful information. I used it mainly for the economic analysis of my project. Having never done anything related to economics before, it was a very useful tool and helped me produce a high quality senior design project.

About the Author

Cindy Stanfield earned her Ph.D in physiology at the University of California at Davis. She teaches human physiology lecture and laboratory courses and neuroscience at the University of South Alabama (USA), and researches sensory modulation. She received the College of Allied Health Professions Excellence in Service Award in 2003 and the University of South Alabama Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2004. She also serves as the advisor for the health pre-professionals at USA. She is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.

Very laggy. I am unable to scroll down or across a page in many cases when zoomed in. It reloads back to the default position. Need to be zoomed in to read without strain on my laptop.
Using the search tool is convenient, but you can only search a specific word or two, so don't think that you're going to "control f" through the entire book to find answers. Would rather have a paper textbook

Short on How-To and Clarity

This book is based on a simple premise: prime your AFV models in grey; then “pre-shade” them in black followed by four other shades of grey; then apply chipping and weathering in grey too; apply a base color in a highly diluted form. And voila! You have a professional looking kit.

That’s it. That’s all. Now we need to ask ourselves, whether the above paragraph is worth any money?

The author takes credit for this process and calls it the “Black & White Technique”. He states that it’s only a few years old – and in this 84-page book, it’s summarized in the equivalence of 2.5 pages of large font text.

The author states that the beauty of this technique avoids the tendency for modelers to apply heavy base coats, followed by highlight coats, then weathering followed by “throwing mud” around. Unfortunately, what we’re left with is a black and white coating process, still requiring highlighting, and weathering followed by “throwing mud” around.

It’s an oversized, softcover book, though sturdy enough to take some punishment. Mine came plastic-wrapped which was a very nice touch.

After a couple of introductory sections covering paint choices and airbrushing, I was really excited to push on thinking this book would make a constant companion during my building forays in the months to come. The author’s enthusiasm and sense of humor really were genuine.

But then the book’s weaknesses hit me.

Its prime fault lay with the underlying principal of the Black & White Technique. You see, it’s totally reliant on knowledge of another critical painting skill called the “Zenithal Technique”.

It’s just that nowhere in the book, is the Zenithal Technique explained. Though you do get a brief hint to place your model under a lamp.

Then appear its other two main shortcomings:

1. Poor English translation: Look, I’ve yet to find a publication such as Tamiya Model Magazine International or Model Military International without its regular share of typos. But there are points in this book where comprehension becomes impossible. Somewhere between Spanish and English things went off track.

2. Illustrations: The photos accompanying the text are beautiful and some quite large. It’s just that rarely do they show what the text is describing. Further, at times you’ll only see one perspective of a model – and as guide that’s basically useless.

I did pick up one tip from the text. And that’s to paint small arms flat black and then highlight them with a graphite pencil. It avoids the need for gunmetal paint shading. So I will try that.

Yet, that’s about it.

Otherwise, you’re simply left with an oversized folio, offering shots of roughly 19 different AFVs – some with only one pic each, and a text that isn’t educational at all.

Language aside, had this book discussed Zenithal painting step by step, and then comprehensively focused on only just 2 kits from start to finish showing their total crafting and painting – it would have been a true winner.

Instead we’re simply given single zoomed out shots of the odd paintbrush touching undefined spots, and paint pots sitting besides others.

In a nutshell, this book will simply live amid my other modeling magazines merely as a pictorial collection, rather than a tool.

If you’re prepared to accept the price asked for this book in this way, you won’t be disappointed. But if you’re looking for a “guidebook”, as its title suggests, you need to look elsewhere.

One other thing I do give the author credit for: his use of oils to simulate grime.

It comes as an aftereffect of his oil washes, but it is something I am going to try and replicate with acrylics if I can. If not, I still have a set of oil paints sitting by my side.

When combined with weathering I'm very satisfied with my results

I found the major selling point of this book to be a bit brief, the bnw technique is given a couple pages with a few example photos but it's enough to get the idea. It does not explain techniques in the excruciating detail of Rinaldis tank art series.

And the author backs away from giving sbs details as I have found to be a theme in Jimenez books too and rather serves to inspire by explaining the technique adequately and leaving it to the reader to experiment. The author frequently advises deviating from a strict formula for distressing a model and suggests working in very measured and considered approach. There are however several outlines for some weathering sequences depending on the vehicles use and location ie new tank doing field test or battle tested tank in Europe.

I found the technique to be time consuming but it helped me elevate my models depth and really added a lot of character to the model. It enhances small models and gives them a very striking appearance. When combined with weathering I'm very satisfied with my results.

Something else I found refreshing is that the author doesn't seem to work for any hobby company. So you get an opinion on a wide variety of product brands that he favors and there is an explanation why.

I think this is a solid buy for anyone who wants a little more artistic model result and who is willing to experiment with a technique without being directed by a more formulaic approach.

Good book for starters

Excellent book, with very good photos and step-by-step explanation. Ideal for hobbyists like me re-starting after decades of inactivity. Only negative side is that the text is written in poor colloquial English by a foreigner who speaks English as a foreign language. The publisher didn't hire a good proof-reader or a proof-reader in the first place.
