Handbook of clinical child psychology
By Joav Merrick
This is indeed the "Bible" for the clinical child psychologist. As a pediatrician, who through all my professional life have worked closely with child psychologists, permit me to review this very serious and professional handbook. It is edited by C Eugene Walker from Oklahoma and Michael C Roberts from Kansas with 114 contributors (all from United States). The first edition of the handbook was published 18 years ago and it has since turned into a reference and guide for students, adademics and clinicians in the field. The book is divided into seven sections with a total of 55 chapters. The first section deals with child development and the first chapter with families and children in history with a focus on American history, but I especially liked the chapter by Judith A Chafel and Kathryn Gold Hadley on poverty and well-being of children and their families. This is a new addition to this edition, but a very important one. Poverty and hunger are old phenomena, but only recently become a subject of research and interest to politicians. They should be interested, because poverty is a major public health problem in many developed countries. Data from 1996 in the United States estimate that 20.5% of the children were living in poverty. This well researched paper will give you information on definition of poverty, effects on development, health and psychosocial risks, resiliency and implications for clinical intervention. Section two provides different diagnostic assessments of children and adolescents, section three deals with problems of early life and clinical problems of birth, neonatology, infant and preschool period and section four about problems of childhood. This last section has 16 chapters with some interesting entries. I especially liked the chapter on mental retardation, which takes into account the 1992 American Association on Mental Retardation (AMMR) definition of mental retardation, where not only IQ, but multidimential classification was used as a novel way to look upon mental retardation. I would have liked an entry on the use of the word "mental retardation", which is very much debated (sometimes very hotly like at the last international conference in Seattle in August 2000) and at all not in use in many parts of the world, where instead the term "intellectual disability" is preferred. Section five has nine relevant chapters on adolescence, but I would like to see a chapter on teenage pregnancy in the next edition, because that is especially a problem in United States and United Kingdom, where we are talking about potential psychological risks for the next generation also. Section six conveys intervention strategies with good chapters on hospitalization and pharmacotherapy among others. The last section has special topics like cultural issues, divorce, grief, ethics and forensic evaluation. The chapter on impact of a parent chronic illness is very interesting and I would also suggest a chapter on chronic illness or disability in the child for the next edition. This topic is mentioned in another chapter (on contemporary issues), but deserves a full chapter. The words disability and intellectual disability are not mentioned even in the index. In this section I especially like the chapter on child maltreatment by Barbara L Bonner and collegues, which is a good review of the field of child abuse and neglect, but again the focus in on the United States and international work in the field not mentioned. A chapter on research in child psychology and the use of internet should be added for the next edition. The effects of the internet on children and adolescents should also be added. We recently had a case here in Israel, where an internet connection between two adolescents (a Jewish male and Arab female) were used by terrorists to capture and murder the 14 year old boy. I would have liked to see a section eight with chapters on the future of infancy, childhood and adolescence both in the United States, but also a chapter on international work and research in the field of child psychology. All in all a very positive review for a very useful handbook that can be used by both psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and physicians and thanks for a good editing job. It was a pleasure to read and use this handbook.

Is it worth it?
By Philip O Gosschalk
The strength of the book is that it summarizes the main issues on assessment and treatment quite well. Certainly worthwhile for a quick reference to current opinion on topics but if you're after the finer detail of theory this may not be your book and you might want to try "Child Psychopathology" by Mash & Barkley. The question to ask is, is this book worth $170USD new? If you don't mind spending this money then the book is a useful addition to a professional library for advanced students and professionals.

Highly recommended for pediatric clinical workers.
By Anthony Sanchez
I am writing about the 3rd edition, which is the most current volume. The only disappointment that I have about this text is that I did not obtain it much earlier. The chapters are well written with many references for further study. The practitioner can keep abreast of the current literature on topics that s/he may already be familiar, or obtain authoritive information about other clinical areas not part of one's regular practice. This text is not written in the style of a dictionary, that is, the reader is given a summary in the style and length of a journal article. The book compliments the older volumes of the American Handbook of Psychiatry for which I have still found much use.
I also give strong recommendation for the Social Worker's Desk Reference that is available on Amazon. This latter book is a 2002 text that for some disorders gives a better summary than the Handbook. The Desk Reference is of value regardless of one's clinical license.

Part Time Cowboy, by Maisey Yates

A one-time bad girl comes home to small-town Oregon in the first in a sexy, heartfelt new series from USA Today best-selling author Maisey Yates

Sadie Miller isn't expecting any welcome-home parades on her return to Copper Ridge. Least of all from part-time rancher, full-time lawman Eli Garrett. The straitlaced, impossibly hot deputy sheriff glares at her as if she's the same teenage hoodlum who fled town 10 years ago. But running from her demons has brought Sadie full circle, ready to make a commitment at last. Not to a man but to a bed-and-breakfast. On Garrett land. Okay, so her plan has a tiny flaw.

Eli works too hard to let a blonde ball of trouble mess up his town. But keeping an eye on Sadie makes it tough to keep his hands off her. And if she's so wrong for him, why does being with her feel so right?

A steamy but heartwarming romp of a story
By Liana Smith Bautista | Will Read for Feels
* Review originally published on WillReadForFeels.com
** I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I’d known Maisey Yates’ name from having read a few of her books for Harlequin Presents, so when I learned she was starting a new small town romance series, I was definitely interested to see how it would stand up against the other books I’d read by her. I’d expected a sweet read, and I got it. What I hadn’t expected was how steamy this writer could get when unleashed—and that’s definitely all to the good.

What you get here is an opposites attract romance that has the main character and love interest falling in love in the midst of hard-headed denial. In fact, their stubbornness and tendency to walk around each other with emotional blinders on is part of what makes Part Time Cowboy such a fun read. Because if ever there was a couple dragged kicking and screaming into love, I’d say that Sadie and Eli were it.

Eli is Mr. Always-in-Control, and it’s not just because he’s a cop. A chaotic upbringing has him seeking order in everything, to the point where he is scrupulously neat and never steps a foot out of line. He’s spent his life cleaning up after people, and he has neither the time or the inclination to pursue messy romantic engagements. His roots are in his ranch and in the family he struggles to keep together—his little sister Kate and his grief-stricken alcoholic brother Connor.

Which means that Sadie is completely Ms. Wrong for her. Barring the fact that he once arrested her when she was a teenager the crisis therapist turned B and B owner who has somehow moved into a house on his family’s ranch isn’t known for putting down roots. In fact, she has a habit of picking up and running, and she’s all about no-strings-attached living. Except that she’s had a bit of a crisis herself, in the sense that she is having a go at making a home for herself and facing her demons. One of those demons just happens to be Eli. Which means her attraction to him makes absolutely no sense.

If you’re a fan of verbal sniping, a ton of sexual innuendo, and hot, hot sex scenes, this is definitely worth a read because the chemistry between Sadie and Eli is pretty darned steamy, and there’s just a whole lot of fun and levity in their banter and dealings with each other that’ll balance out the seriousness of their emotional baggage. These aren’t two tortured souls wallowing in the angst of their mutually messed up lives. They’re two people trying to make something of themselves despite the crappy cards they were dealt in the family department. And I’ll admit to being heartily sick of the whole angsty misunderstood trope at the moment, and this may have given me a deeper appreciation of the light yet skillful characterization Yates achieves in this book.

Beyond that, the town of Copper Ridge came alive for me, even though I reckon I can count the hours I’ve spent in small American towns on the fingers of one hand. But there’s a kind of old-school charm about the town, and honestly, I wasn’t a two paragraphs into the book when Miranda Lambert started playing in my head.

I haven’t been happy with any of the contemporary romances I’ve been reading lately, but this book was a breath of fresh (country) air for me. Yates has a talent for writing the feels—even managing to insert a bit of humor into the admittedly steamy sex scenes! I was definitely happy with this read, and the little preview of Brokedown Cowboy (Copper Ridge #2), which will be out on May 26, that I found at the end of the book was sufficient to put it on my TBR list.

A lot of fun!
By Carole Wooten
4 Stars!

I really had a lot of fun reading this book. I had hoped to find a nice little romance when I picked up this book and I ended up getting so much more. This book was full of complex and compelling characters that I really liked a lot. This book was actually good enough that I found myself reading part of it while waiting for a show to start at Disney World and while I realize that I may not win any mother of the year awards for that move, I just had to know what happened next in the little town of Copper Ridge.

I loved the characters in this story. Sadie has a lot of spunk and she is tough. She has been through a lot in her life and has learned to cope of moving and starting over anytime things get difficult. When she decides she wants to quit running, she makes plans to move back to the last place that felt like home, Copper Ridge. She signs a 5 year lease to run a Bread and Breakfast on the same land owned by the Garrett Family.

Eli has also been through a lot during his life but has handled the stress in a very different manner than Sadie. Eli likes order and he is the one his family counts on to take care of things. He is also the same man that arrested Sadie the last time she was in town. He is not happy about the idea of Sadie running a Bread and Breakfast on the same land he calls home.

I loved the chemistry between Eli and Sadie. It was simply incredible. I liked the fact that both Eli and Sadie approached relationships in an unusual manner and both tried really hard to keep their feelings from getting involved. The pair were honest with each other throughout the story and their banter has me laughing a few times. I really liked the pair as a couple.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. This was actually the first book by Maisey Yates that I have had a chance to read but I definitely plan to read more in the future. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the wonderful new series.

I received a copy of this book from Harlequin via Net Galley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

Hilarious and Sweet
By Melissa Reads
To say this book took me by surprise is an understatement. I thought from the blurb it would be a cute read, but I had no idea it would turn out to be one of the best books I've read this year. It had everything that makes a book great for me. Sadie and Eli's story was the perfect mix of sweet, sexy, undeniable chemistry and laugh-out-loud moments.

When things get tough, Sadie runs. And that's just what she did ten years ago, after being arrested. She fled the small town of Copper Ridge and never looked back. Since then, she's bounced around from place to place, never really feeling settled.

She finds herself back in Copper Ridge after ten years, looking to put down roots in the only place she really ever called home for an extended period of time. She's signed a 5 year lease to run a bed and breakfast on the Garrett's property, which is a huge commitment for her.

The only problem, the younger Garrett brother, Eli has no idea about the deal his older brother worked out with Sadie. So imagine his surprise when she shows up in town. She was his first . . . arrest.

"You never forget the first woman you put in handcuffs."

Eli is the Deputy Sheriff of Copper Ridge and he's in the midst of planning his campaign for Sheriff. He is the epitome of control. He likes everything to be in order and it makes him come off as uptight and stiff. The complete opposite of Sadie.

"Are we flirting?"

Let me tell you, these two together were hilarious! Their "arguments" were laced with innuendos and their banter was perfect. They were so good at pushing each other's buttons and building up the sexual tension. It was a lot of fun to watch. I haven't laughed that hard reading a book in a long time.

"So how did you sleep?" he asked. "Real answer this time."
"Like a baby."
"So you woke up every few hours crying?"
"Meh," she said, taking a sip of her coffee.
"Or maybe just . . . wet and aching and wishing it was my hand between your legs instead of your own."

But, it wasn't all laughter. These characters really had depth and such tender and unexpected moments between them. What started off as just sex, morphed into so much more for both of them. Eli was such a bad-ass and even though he isn't a cat person, he totally melted my heart when he offered to give Toby his own room.

"I'm sorry, are you ordering me around? Do you honestly think I'm going to obey like a lapdog? I, sir, am a cat person, and I'll probably just bite your hand."

I really liked all of the secondary characters in this book too. I'm super excited that Connor and Kate will be getting their own books, but I hope Lydia's gets a book too. Her friendship towards Sadie was so unexpected and it makes me think she would be a kick-ass heroine. I also want to know what happens with Alison. There was no real closure for her story line. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don't Know What You're Eating and What You Can Do about It, by Larry Olmsted

“Olmsted makes you insanely hungry and steaming mad--a must-read for anyone who cares deeply about the safety of our food and the welfare of our planet.” —Steven Raichlen, author of the Barbecue! Bible series

“The world is full of delicious, lovingly crafted foods that embody the terrain, weather, and culture of their origins. Unfortunately, it’s also full of brazen impostors. In this entertaining and important book, Olmsted helps us fall in love with the real stuff and steer clear of the fraudsters.” —Kirk Kardashian, author of Milk Money: Cash, Cows, and the Death of the American Dairy Farm

You’ve seen the headlines: Parmesan cheese made from wood pulp. Lobster rolls containing no lobster at all. Extra-virgin olive oil that isn’t. So many fake foods are in our supermarkets, our restaurants, and our kitchen cabinets that it’s hard to know what we’re eating anymore. In Real Food / Fake Food, award-winning journalist Larry Olmsted convinces us why real food matters and empowers consumers to make smarter choices.

Olmsted brings readers into the unregulated food industry, revealing the shocking deception that extends from high-end foods like olive oil, wine, and Kobe beef to everyday staples such as coffee, honey, juice, and cheese. It’s a massive bait and switch in which counterfeiting is rampant and in which the consumer ultimately pays the price.

But Olmsted does more than show us what foods to avoid. A bona fide gourmand, he travels to the sources of the real stuff to help us recognize what to look for, eat, and savor: genuine Parmigiano-Reggiano from Italy, fresh-caught grouper from Florida, authentic port from Portugal. Real foods that are grown, raised, produced, and prepared with care by masters of their craft. Part cautionary tale, part culinary crusade, Real Food / Fake Food is addictively readable, mouthwateringly enjoyable, and utterly relevant.

Review
“Olmsted’s well-researched expos reveals how often what we eat isn’t what it seems. (Parmesan cheese made of wood pulp or fake lobster rolls, anyone?) Eye-opening.”—PEOPLE magazine

“Olmsted boldly walks readers through a course in food authenticity that covers olive oil, cheese, Champagne, seafood, steak, coffee, and more. Readers will be inspired by his intensity and clarity, and floored by how far some counterfeiters go to fool consumers and some historic food institutions go to protect their products and their names. Olmsted’s research is impressive, and he lets no stone go unturned. He lets the terrifying facts speak for themselves, adding just a little humor . . . Olmsted’s sharp language will hopefully put fires under counterfeiters everywhere . . . With the guiding hand of a good friend and prose that keeps the reader’s eye moving, Olmsted insists that readers ‘shop better and cook more.’”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Larry Olmstead makes you insanely hungry and steaming mad in this provocative account of how fraud threatens not just the world’s great craft foods (think caviar, Kobe beef, and Parmigiano-Reggiano) but our everyday diet.A must-read for anyone who cares deeply about the safety of our food and the welfare our planet.” —Steven Raichlen, author of the Barbecue Bible cookbook series and host of Project Smoke and Primal Grill on PBS

The content blows the doors off the kitchens.” —Michael Patrick Shiels, radio host and author of Invite Yourself to the Party

“Larry Olmsted’s meticulously researched tour de force is chilling for what he uncovers about the food industry. At the same time his love of great food and his skill in writing about it make me want to try every one of the real foods he recommends. Where's the Kobe Beef?: More than 99.9 percent of the so-called Kobe beef sold in this country is Fake.

Parmesan-Gate: Most Parmesan cheese sold in the United States, grated or whole, cheap or expensive, is Fake.

The Restaurant Scam: Restaurants can claim any food is “organic” or “dry aged,” “heritage breed” or “wild caught.” Even names of farms and types of fish are misrepresented to justify higher prices.

The Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Racket: Though widely considered the healthiest fat, 75 to 80 percent of the extra-virgin olive oil sold in this country is Fake, and some is even dangerous.

The Sushi Fraud: DNA testing was used to compare the fish that menus offered with the actual species brought to the table in New York City sushi restaurants. In the largest study, 100 percent of the restaurants had lied.

The Seafood Swap: A third of the seafood sold in this country is intentionally mislabeled.

Narrow scope, but excellent information
By R. Mesnard
Our household is very careful about the food we buy, which is why I was quite interested in this book by Mr. Olmstead. I was fortunate to hear the interview of him on the Diane Rehm show as well. However, I found this book to be rather frustrating, though it does contain a wealth of interesting and, at times, compelling information. We tend to buy organic whenever possible, and constantly struggle with the budget challenges that presents. So I was hopeful this book would not only provide a sort of guide map for selecting high quality foods, but would also either reassure me that the organic brand is worth while, or dissuade me from spending the extra cash on organic labeled products.
Regarding the organic brand, it is never directly addressed. There are many comments that cast significant doubt on the organic label, and others that suggest you look for the label. Certainly, it depends on the food under consideration. In some cases, such as seafood, there is no organic standard. However, in others Mr. Olmstead presents the picture of a defined standard that is not enforced. I'm left pretty much where I started - choose organic when possible, even if it isn't 100% accurate. Further, it always pays to have some idea of the 'provenance' of the product - country of origin, farm, etc... even if that can be faked.
I was also a little surprised to see two entire chapters devoted to meat, an entire chapter on Champagne and Scotch, an entire chapter on wines. As a book on 'food', it is really a book about seafood, olive oils, kobe beef, wine and spirits, and cheese. Not much else. I think this book speaks more to the food preferences of Mr. Olmstead than a more comprehensive treatment of the thousands of food products you'll find in a typical grocery store. What he left out could fill volumes. His often long ramblings about regional culture, specific farms and villages, his travels and his food experiences tended to obscure what I was looking for based on the title of the book. A better title might have been: "Larry's World of Food" or something like that.
Bottom line - excellent information, but for a limited set of foods and beverages.

Problems with Fake and Counterfeit Foods
By Bassocantor
In REAL FOOD/FAKE FOOD, Mr. Olmsted documents, in detail, the rampant problems with fake and counterfeit foods sold in the U.S. He covers quite a few different food items, including beef, seafood, cheese, alcoholic drinks--even fruit juice. The frauds are especially concentrated in "special foods which for the first time in 2014 topped one hundred billion dollars in the United States. This category is rife with scams, including many foods viewed as healthier choices, as well as fancy cheeses, meats, oils, and other “gourmet” items."

Prior to reading this book, I admit that I had NO IDEA of how widespread the problem is. Okay, I get it now--it's a HUGE problem. It's also a little scary: "Unless you are leaving the supermarket via the “8 Items or Less” express lane, something in your cart is likely fake." In fact, the president himself got involved: "In mid-2014 President Obama announced that he was going to clean it up and appointed a seafood task force. When was the last time a national food crisis— and it is a crisis— got so out of control that the president had to step in?"

As another example, the widely-cited Consumer Reports confirmed the problem with seafood: "When Consumer Reports tested twenty-three supposedly wild-caught salmon fillets bought nationwide in 2005 – 6, only ten were in fact wild." So, the folks there showed that seafood was wrong over half of the time.

The author uses a variety of examples to illustrate the problem. For example, he spends a lot of time documenting how "Parmesan" Cheese sold in the U.S. is so much different than the actual, original product. And yet, the U.S. product is allowed to use the name, which is very misleading.

The author cites numerous statistics showing how the seafood industry, in particular, is filled with fake products. He notes that if you go to a restaurant and order sushi, it is near 100% certainty that your meal will NOT be what you think it is. He also cites numerous studies which confirm the deception--especially rampant in restaurants.

Even fruit juice has problems. Mr. Olmsted notes how labeling can mislead the consumer about what is really in the product. I thought the legal case involving 0.3% "Pomegranate juice" especially interesting. In that case, a major soda brand wanted to sell the juice as "Pomengranate Juice," in spite of the nearly non-existent pomengranate juice actually in the bottle.

Whilst reading REAL FOOD/FAKE FOOD, I kept on thinking, "How did this happening? Why doesn't the government stop this?" Well, it turns out that the author is equally mad; he has harsh words for the FDA, who were uncooperative in assisting him. He notes how he made numerous efforts to try to get the FDA to pay attention--but they refused to even grant him an interview, despite their promises. "No amount of follow-up could make those promises come true or make interviews actually happen. I offered to fly to Washington at my own expense and come to their offices to meet them." (They finally let the author submit some questions for consideration.)

Readers will likely get a little "steamed" when they realize how little protection the FDA is providing. "Federal regulations require (as in mandatory, not optional) the FDA to inspect less than 2 percent of imported seafood , hardly a rigorous analysis . Still, in 2013, inspectors managed to achieve barely a quarter of that incredibly low threshold—and their poor performance has been getting shoddier annually, down from the year before."

Take heart--the book is not all whining and hand wringing. Not at all. In the section, "What Can You Do?" Mr. Olmsted provides some practical solutions--ideas on where to buy the real thing, as well as ideas on how to cook. For example, he notes that the "big box" retailers do a good job at removing fake products--simply because they have so much clout. Similarly, certain grocery chains also are vigilant in not allowing fake products. Of course, the author admits, the real product will be more expensive. He personally has decided to have the REAL thing, but just have it less frequently.

All in all, I thought REAL FOOD/FAKE FOOD was an excellent book. I learned a TON about this problem. Honestly, I was totally ignorant of this issue before. At least I am now better informed. I'm also a little mad.

Don't trust the menu!
By The Wik
Living in and eating food from the Hudson Valley, NY, we are lucky to know the source of much of our food. Larry Olmsted's book further emphasizes the importance of this connection. His details of the intricate process of producing Parmigiano-Reggiano is fascinating. Not all of his details are as in depth but his findings are disturbing and some outright frightening. His suggestions are very helpful and some very surprising. Highly recommend a read!

Praise for Mission: Mars

"Pascal Lee is a true pioneer of Mars exploration. This book makes me want to put on a spacesuit and go to Mars!" -Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Astronaut and author of Mission To Mars

About the Author
Dr. Pascal Lee is chairman of the Mars Institute and a planetary scientist at the SETI Institute. He is also director of the NASA Haughton-Mars Project at NASA Ames Research Center. The project helps plan future human missions to Mars.

Pascal’s interest in space began at an early age. When he was six, he built his first “spaceship” by putting a laundry basket on roller skates. Early test flights, often co-piloted with his younger brother, did not always end well. He refined his skills by studying physics and geology at the University of Paris in France. He continued on with a PhD in astronomy and space sciences at Cornell University in New York.

When not researching ways to advance space exploration, Pascal likes to play with his three dogs and paint space art. He is also a helicopter pilot and flight instructor.

Fun and educational!
By Brian
Although geared towards a youth audience, I really enjoyed reading Mission: Mars as an adult. I found the fun facts about Mars and all of the details involved in planning for the challenges and dangers for a mission to be very interesting. The pictures and photographs that illustrate this information were fantastic. Two of my favorite parts were life aboard the ship and the weirdest attractions of Mars. Having Dr. Lee as the "Training Director" was also a nice touch! I recommend for any young "explorers".

Great gift for all ages!

I gave this book to 9 kids that I know - 3 nephews, 1 niece, kids of friends - they all LOVED it. It is entertaining, informative, easy to read in short pieces for the kids. They love opening up to a different page and reading the different factoids and stories put together by the author, who obviously has a wealth of amazing personal experience with Mars exploration. It is a great way to get children and adults to learn about planetary science, as well as to stimulate creativity and imagination! Wonderful book! Congratulations to the author and I hope there will be a future series!

exciting and inspiring!
By Elizabeth A
One of the many great things about this little book is the sense of "this is happening... we are going to Mars!"
Dr Lee's style of framing the challenges involved in the Mars project, is a perfect model of problem solving: what do we know, what do we need to know and what are the parameters of the situation.
Lots of open doors here for a child's imagination to roam around a big, exciting project.
I sure hope this gem makes it into classrooms.
