In this book the well-known spiritual writer and teacher Fr. Benedict Groeschel, C. F. R., surveys the development and trials of Christian devotion from the days of the martyrs until the twentieth century. Tracking it through the centuries and among "sadly divided branches of Christianity", he finds a commonality of experience and even of language that is constantly ignored among Christians themselves. By observing what "image of Christ" the canvas of common devotion portrays, he hopes we will move "not to discredit this image, but to sharpen it and make it more consistent with the New Testament and the ancient Church".

Though the devotional life is sometimes brushed off as unimportant in comparison to a theological understanding of Christ, Groeschel warns that such dismissal threatens to make distant, unknown and obscure the Savior who said "I am with you always." The answer instead is to draw near to Jesus in devotion and with authentic expressions of that devotion, which themselves help paint the image of Christ found concretely in revelation onto the minds and daily life of the devout.

Excellent Study of Devotional Life of Christianity

Excellent book. Fr. Groeschel has written a different type of book. Rather than a classic history book Fr. Groeschel covers the devotional life of Christians from Jesus to current times. The book covers the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant views and contains writings representative of each group. Fr. Groeschel shows how the core essence of Christianity has not really changed over the last two thousand years.

I am a graduate student in Theology and most of my courses cover systematic or moral theology. This book is a vastly different approach. It is a study of the devotional life of the Christian people. What better way is there to understand what the ordinary people believe than to study the classic devotional writings of each period? By understanding how the people pray and worship we gain understanding of their beliefs.

The book is long (600) pages but you do not have to read it cover to cover. Fr. Groeschel gives guidance in the introduction on how to approach the book depending on the perspective you bring to the book. The book also is an excellent introduction to many spiritual writers and I was led to investigate writers who I was not familiar with.

This book was given to me for Christmas and I am most appreciative. I will enjoy reading it in the years to come. I highly recommend it. I believe it will become a classic devotional reference work.

I am Protestant, and must admit I bought this book because I so admire Fr. Benedict, having watched him numerous times on his program of talks on TV. His book carries the same gentle, soothing, tolerant, comforting style as his talks. I am 90 years old, and though young folks may not derive the same pleasure from Fr Benedict's words, I am sure many older people of all denominations will feel the same way that I do when they read this book.

Works if you work it

This is a great reference book for mind power. You can do it you use your mind correctly. The correct lessons and help are here for you. You can do it if you use these tools correctly. This is not a one read, use it as a library for help and hints to use the power of your thoughts to obtain what you wish to accomplish.

Flawed execution, good bones

One of the maddening things about manifesting the practical aspects of the Law of Attraction is in finding a manual that leads you stepwise into success. In actual fact, I believe you need to write that manual for yourself. Like many others, however, I cannot bypass a book that claims to have done that work for me. As such, this book might be interesting. It certainly has a few ideas that make you want to take action, and as such, I can recommend it.

There is one huge drawback though. This book has not been edited or proof-read, It is littered with errors of grammar and syntax. Is that a big deal? In this case, yes. At times, the sentences make absolutely no sense. At times, I think the opposite to what was intended has been written. Yes, you can work your way past that, but it significantly inhibits the mind from relaxing into the ideas. There are some passages about which I have not the faintest idea what was intended. Words are missing, or expressions are convoluted to the point of incomprehensibility.

Despite that, I think it is worth ploughing on through. Read the book a second time and make notes - it will add to your library of action, and open up further avenues for exploration. The journey is beautiful, so get going!

Math, Great Britain Style

This book, although written for a British audience, provides a much needed resource for teaching young children about math through play. It's focus is on 4, 5 and 6-year-olds. There are quite a few unfamiliar terms (like "conkers" for chestnuts) but not so much that the ideas don't come across.

PreSchool-A large, brilliantly colored rendition of the counting rhyme "one, two, buckle my shoe." Baker uses an imaginative array of acrylic colors for his hens-greens, purples, and pinks to contrast with the warm, yellow straw background. There are lots of things to count, such as sticks, eggs, chicks, and hens. A fine choice for toddler story hours.

Ages 3-6. Kids will adore this big fat hen, and even though the book doesn't really work as the counting book it's supposed to be, the artwork is enough to carry it. The text is the old rhyme, "One, two, buckle my shoe," and the double-page spreads show the hen and her chicks (first appearing as eggs) enacting the words. On the pages on which the numbers appear, for instance, "5, 6," there are six eggs and five caterpillars, a dual concept that may be difficult for beginning counters to comprehend. The next page, "Pick up sticks," is even more chock-full, with chicks and lots of sticks everywhere. Children who want to skip the counting altogether can just enjoy the singsong text and the pictures executed in acrylic paints. The big fat hen is very large and quite beautiful, with iridescent green feathers accented with purple and red; her friends are just as lovely, all colors, some with delicate patterns in their feathers. With oversize characters and objects that can be seen at the very back of the room, this is a ready read-aloud for the story-hour set. Ilene Cooper

I bought this book sight unseen and absolutely love it. I'm a kinder teacher always on the prowl for books with folk stories and nursery rhymes. Big Fat hen is... 1,2 Buckle My Shoe. The illustrations are fabulous and the kids, love the rhyming. It's a popular pick in my classroom!

Our four month old grandson is fascinated with this book!

Our grandson loves this book and learned to turn the pages at four months. The coloring and graphics appeal to him. Another grandmother gave it to us and she was right on target. It is the only book we've found that holds his interest and that he doesn't chew instead of read.

This is a great first book for a child, lots of counting and things to see in the pictures if you are really paying attention. Your toddler/preschooler will love it!
